Day 1 — July 17, 1966
“One drunk near Indianapolis. Remains of a wreck near it.”
One drunk near Indianapolis. Remains of a wreck near it.
Ate breakfast first day at roadside table in Illinois. Phil and Nancy ate quickly.
Got behind (2 cars behind) a travel trailer that got to swaying and almost upset.
Ozarks around Rolla, Mo. made us think of Kentucky — houses and businesses similar.
Didn't mind heat till around 1:30 p.m. It went to between 95° and 100° — most people had air conditioner in car.
Saw cows standing in water up their shoulders.
At 65 M.P.H. some fellow in another car passed us.
Left home around 2 AM. Interstate 70 to St. Louis, then on to US 66. Filled up six times on the road — 13.2 gallons, 13.9, 10.9, 12.2, and two quarts of oil along the way. Gas cost between $3.09 and $5.00 a fill. Grabbed pop for $.40 and an evening meal for $2.65. Stayed at the Frontier Motel in Tulsa — $14.28 for the night.
