Letter 11 — Baltimore August the 24, 1863
“they were within ten steps of me when I shot the last time and I did not get ten more till I was wounded”
Dear Mother I receved your letter and was glad to hear from you wonce more for it seemed a long time to b with out a letter from you well I suppose you wold like to no a little about the fight at Winchester the fight began a Friday with the Cavlery and on satturday morning the long roal was beat and we fel in line and marched out a bout too mile and lay there till about fore a clock when the rebels came up and we had a scrmish that lasted a bout and houre and we had to fall back and the fight closed till the next morning when the fight began a gane south east of town and was kep up all day but our regiment was sent in the morning to a brest work to suport a battery north west of town there was now fighting there till five oclock in the evening then they opened on us with a bout twenty fore peaces of cannon wich lasted a bout and hour and then they charged on the brest works with five regments and drove us away but we did not leave till they were coming over the works when curnel give orders to retreat they were within ten steps of me when I shot the last time and I did not get ten more till I was wounded and lay there til the rebels fell back and then I rold to wher ther was some horses and got on won and rode to the hospittel so the forses wer all cald in to the fort and stad there till too aclock monday morning they started to retreat but they had not got very far till the fight commenced a gane it had not lasted long till Math was wounded he was shot thru the winpipe and came out at the pint of the shoulder blade he cod not move hand or foot for a bout an hour he lay on the feald till non when the rebels cared him to a hous and drest his wound and they fech him to the hopittle but he was up a going a rond in fore days you sed that uncle sam thot you to come to see us I wold like to see you very well but I think it is to far for you to com we ar boath about aw well as ever I dont no where we will go from here wright as son as you get this give my love to all inquiring frens and tell them that the dead is ready for another fight I will tell you more the next time
