Letter 40 — May 22, 1873
“Ellie sends her love to you and says she would like for you send her one of your pictures.”
I seat myself to let you know that I am well at present hoping when these few lines reach you they will find you the same, the folks are all well. I had like to got crippled last Sunday going to Sabbath School with Aaron, him and me was going in his buggy with his horse. One of the shafts or irons broke and let the shafts on his heels when we were going down that hill by Mrs Lyn's old house, he went to kicking and running and throwed us out, I fell between the wheels the hind wheel ran over me. I don't know how I got down without getting hurt worse than I did, it hurt my knee and ankle so that I could not work on Monday. But I am about alright now again and tore my pants nearly off, but it was lucky that I got off without any broken bones. Aaron did not get hurt so much, the horse tore the shafts loose from the buggy or he would tore it all to pieces. We finished planting corn this evening, we planted about 80 acres. Cal has moved over in the old house. There is a Darst girl staying with her a sister of Mary's. Nan got one of the horses and Grandpap one, so Lide has something to drive. Jane is still with Nan. I got harness when I got my buggy but got them seperate from the buggy. We had a big smashup on the railroad last Sunday night. I suppose you have heard of it, it was the bridge by Yeazell's mill, there was 10 cars went down besides the engine, the fireman got his mashed so that they had to take it off, he was all the one that was hurt. It was caused by one of Bane's horses getting on the track and when the locomotive ran over it it throwed the two wheels off the track, it was an awful sight. Susan Hause is dead. Well I must bring my letter to a close for this time for it is nearly ten o'clock and I am getting sleepy, so good bye. Write soon. P. S. Ellie sends her love to you and says she would like for you send her one of your pictures. A. H. Mc To A. B.
